Vogue Paris June/July 2015

Daria is on the cover of the June July issue of Vogue Paris photographed by David Sims.

This is Daria's 11th Vogue Paris cover and the ten year anniversary of her first issue (March 2005) ... and her second cover this year already! On a side note I'm also quietly adding new work to the site so stay tuned for updates.

On Holiday With Daria and Vogue Paris

Daria recently visited Paris for a Lancome party (you can see pics here) and gave a quick interview to Vogue Paris. You can read the roughly translated article below ... the most interesting bit comes at the end! There are also some beautiful new pictures taken by Alexi Lubomirski for Lancome included with the article.

What do you think is the ideal spot for an unforgettable vacation? The most rejuvenating place, the more energizing?
"In my opinion, there is no more disconnecting than being on a sailboat away from the earth. Ireland has also become a place that I particularly like. Soon as I have a few days off, I m 'escapes. With its wilderness, its angular rocks that get lost in the sea, I think this country has the most beautiful beaches in the world, the most natural. "

Are you the type to plan your vacation well in advance or at the last minute from?
"Always at the last minute! Besides, I have not decided what I wanted to do this summer ... We'll see. Usually I book a flight just before departure, and once there, I let me wear the mood. "

Do you take the opportunity to exercise more or just put your body at rest?
"I am sailing whenever I have the opportunity during my long breaks, and it's still rather physical. But I love sleep so much and stay at home in peace!, I wish to retrieve all the hours of sleep that have failed me for the year, and especially to read. I just finished The Goldfinch (Donna Tartt), and just before I was absorbed by The Goddesses of Joseph Campbell . "

Vogue UK September 2013 Cover

After a ridiculously quiet start to the year Daria is finally putting out the kind of work that we're used to. She's landed the cover of the September 2013 issue of Vogue UK. This is Daria's fourth Vogue UK cover, her last being four years ago.

Vogue UK September 2013
Daria Werbowy by Patrick Demarchelier

Daria looks really cool on the cover, almost as if she stepped off the street, stood in front of Patrick Demarchelier's camera and in one shot the cover was borne. Its not so much the model on the cover as it is Daria on the cover.

I also think the relaxed styling on this cover is its own undoing. I gave a little squeal when I learned Daria would be on the cover, but already expected something laid back and relaxed before I saw the image. And laid back and relaxed is what I got. Daria in this kind of set up seems almost formulaic by now and although I love to see her with more work, especially covers, it can tend to be quite boring. The preview below does look much more promising though ... Daria will have 7 photos in this issue, and if I read correctly an article as well!

Vogue UK September 2013 preview

Now, if I had my way Daria would be on the cover of every Vogue, the American version included. And although the latter doesn't seem that possible, more than one Vogue cover this month doesn't seem that implausible. Some keen eyes on the Fashion Spot forums have given regard to these two shots from Mert Alas' Instagram. Both are regarding the behind the scenes production of an unknown project but from the casting (Naomi, Natasha, Kate) and styling it seems very Vogue Paris. I'm guessing there will be a multiple solo-girl covers. How epic would it be to have another Vogue Paris cover following her August one, and two Vogue covers in the same month!? I'll keep you posted!

Vogue Paris August 2013 : Londres en Majeste

My thoughts on this editorial are about as deep as its actual length. What a disappointment that Daria only gets five pages in the August issue of Vogue Paris. If Alt doesn't bother to put any effort into the magazine then I too can leave it at that.

Cover Star : Vogue Paris August 2013

UPDATE A few preview pictures of the editorial have been posted here. I will update with a full post and comments as soon as scans are out!

For her fourth cover of the year Daria appears on the August issue of Vogue Paris, photographed by David Sims, wearing Ralph Lauren, fronting the London issue ... a little all over the place, I know, but we'll dissect that all in a bit.

Vogue Paris August 2013 : Daria by David Sims

I think August is quickly becoming my favourite month. The cover of the August issue of Vogue Paris has become somewhat of a tradition for Daria, and this is her third time on this months issue (August 2008 and August 2009 being her last two). And her eighth VP cover overall!

General consensus on the internet is that this cover is a flop, from the transatlantic styling (an American designer for a London issue?), the text overload, and even Daria's nose ring! I can agree with a few of those qualms but I have to come to the defence of this cover ... or at least try to understand such an underwhelming effort.

After being subjected to the text placement travesty that was American Vogue circa 2007 (*deep sigh*) I can't find too much of a fault with the art direction here. A lot of text, yes, but overwhelming, no. I've heard of a few comparisons of this cover to old Esquire magazine covers. Now, if that magazine had some British roots it might have been an ingenious reference. But alas, both American owned and run, so that aspect fails. The jacket, by Ralph Lauren - a symbol of the influence of London outside of London? Or just a monthly quota to fill for American advertisers? As for the nose ring, I like it! Its another testament to the status of Daria in the industry, when taboos like piercings and tattoos, normally airbrushed out of existence, are allowed to remain in the picture. Its not just another model on this cover, its Daria.

I don't know if these are so much as redeeming factors than justifications for a subpar cover. London + punk + Daria should have produced something much more striking. And wasn't Anglomania like seven years ago?! But we still have the entire inside of the issue to convince us and if theres another 70+ page editorial inside then I'm sure we'll get a few great shots out of it.

In other cover related news, Freja Beha is on the August issue of Vogue UK. Although I've yet to see two of my favourite models work together, at least they'll be in good company at the new stands. And both sporting big grins nonetheless!

Alt, let's meet again next August?

The Daria Files - News & Updates

Because of a site glitch I'm not able to make new posts so I'll just keep updating this post with news instead!

March 18 2013 - Cass x DariaLooks like Daria and Cass are hanging out again! This time we don't get an editorial from the two but rather a few Instagram pics. Enjoy the candidness below ... and I didn't think Daria could be anymore awesome but then she went and wore red leather pants. Happy Monday everyone!

March 16 2013 - Lancome Colour Design "Star Eyes" PaletteI have another Lancome ad to share with you today! It seems we always get these all at once ... not complaning though! This is another ad for the Lancome Colour Design palettes. There are 12 palettes altogether divided into three groups - "Drama Eyes" (from the March 10 post below), "Doll Eyes" and the one below, "Star Eyes". I've added them all to the Lancome 2013 page for you to check out!

Daria is also on the Lancome home page, seeing as these palettes officially launch mid-March (aka right now!). If you're interested in all of the actual palettes then you can check out the Lancome site by clicking on the image below.

March 12 2013 - Lancome Genifique Eye Light Pearl
It looks like another Lancome ad flew under our radar! I stumbled upon a promotional picture for one of Lancome's serums and was 99.9% sure the eyes in the ad were Daria's ...

I held off posting until I found the video spot to accompany the ad and yep it's her! Daria fronts the campaign, for what I'm assuming is the 2012 year, for the Lancome Genifique Eye Light Pearl. Although this product was released as far back as September in Australia it seems like Lancome is really pushing it forward this year. Hopefully you'll see it in print, and enjoy the few seconds or so of Daria in the commercial! Oh, and she's even on the packaging!

March 10 2013 - Lancome Hypnose Drama Eyes
Hey guys! Long time no post! Unfortunately something with my website is preventing me from making new posts so even though I've been trying to update the site in a few weeks I haven't been able to! So I guess a compromise is best - I'll just keep this one post updated (with dates) and place all the Daria news here!

We finally have a new Lancome ad! I was actually flipping through magazines at my bookstore today to see if there were any new images for the spring season. I was out of luck but fortunately single_lady at the bellazon.com forums found this! This is for Lancome's Hypnose Drama Eyes palette and mascara.

August 19 2012 - Vogue Paris September 2012
Its been almost half a year since we've seen Daria on the cover of Vogue Paris (a very long intermission for anyone who keeps track) but editrice Emmanuelle Alt has placed Daria, along with her other favourites Lara Stone and Kate Moss, on the cover of the September issue.

Vogue Paris September 2012

The covers, photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, feature all three models in the same garments and setting and succeed in highlighting all three models' distinct features. For Daria ... I can't get enough of those eyes.

It seems like this trio is a favourite for photographers these days - perhaps a new version of the nineties Trinity of Linda, Christy and Naomi? They've all been photographed by Bruce Weber in that great July 2008 issue of W. But even I'll admit that they have a long way to go before reaching the status of their predecessors.

Vogue Paris February 2012 : Cover and Editorial

Daria and Inez and Vinoodh are at it again! This time for the February 2012 issue of Vogue Paris. I've mentioned in the past year that its a shame Daria's presence in Vogue Paris has been lacking, especially with the appointance of Emmanuelle Alt (a Daria champion) as editor-in-chief. Our wishes were answered with the rumor that Daria would front the February 2012 issue, and now less than a month later we get to see the finished product!

Daria was photographed by Inez and Vinoodh in a very cabaret-esque, Elvis hairdo, Old Hollywood, camp inspired look ... a lot of adjectives but somehow it comes together! The title reads a 66-page editorial shot in Las Vegas and if the cover is any indication of what is to come then expect a lot of classic "Inez and Vinoodh in the big city".

I'll withold my judgement until I see the full thing but for now the cover and this preview image should hold us off until we see the other 64 pages! From the little blurb in French (translation below the image) the editorial seems to focus on Daria as the "real Daria" - the one who journeys the amazon with shamans, sails and who has just bought a house in Ireland (lucky her!). I can't wait to see if this editorial features a little interview with Daria. It's always interesting to hear what she's up to.

"Daria Body & Soul: 5 covers, 20 editorials, 70 pages this month. 8 years of crazy love between Vogue Paris and Daria Werbowy ... this time it is far from the runways, the glitter, and the world of fashion that the muse - a little wild - of Lancôme finds her balance. Instead she finds herself journeying with the shamans, in the middle of the ocean, or cut off from the world in her new home in Ireland. A beautiful soul in a pure state."

P.S. For Daria fans out there, this is Daria's sixth Vogue Paris cover! In my opinion she definitely deserves more ;)

Vogue Paris February 2012 News

It looks like a no-go for the Prada Spring 2012 campaign but I've got some even better news ... Emmanuelle Alt will be dedicating an entire issue of Vogue Paris to Daria, lensed by Inez and Vinoodh for the February 2012 issue!

Inez and VInoodh gave an interview to style.com, an excerpt from which you can read below:
Vogue: You have a really varied crew of favorites—Daria, Tasha, Guinevere, Kate Moss, among others. What do you respond to in all these different girls?
IVL: All of the girls who are in there have that quality. I think that’s what it is. Once they can know themselves well enough to let it go and go for the idea of making something together. What’s exciting for us is when someone is not afraid to be someone else, and it takes character to be able to do that [...] The same goes for Daria. We’re shooting a whole issue on her for French Vogue for February.
This is great news - and a long time coming! We haven't seen Daria in Vogue Paris in almost a year. And now that she's taking a break to sail and relax it will be great to see her come back in full force. I've always hoped for a guest-edited issue from Daria, which usually happens for the December/January issue, but I suppose this is the next best thing.

Vogue Paris June July 2011 : Osmose

With Emmanuelle Alt as the new editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris I believe we should be seeing a lot more of Daria in the coming months! After all Daria us Alts favourite model. Now, I'm not sure how I feel about Alt as an editor but you know I am all for more Daria in the magazine. For the June/July issue Daria has only one photo but a beautiful photo it is.

I have to say its one of my favourite of Daria's endless "on-the-beach" photos. The setting, colours and pose are beautiful and this image kind of reminds me of old seventies editorials like the ones Marisa Berenson used to shoot with Avedon. It would have been beautiful to see more but sometimes the best things come in smaller packages.

Behind The Scenes of ... Fard Fatal

Finally! After a few weeks of tedious waiting Lancome uploaded the fifteen minute video of Daria's editorial in May Vogue Paris "Fard Fatal". I'm trying to upload this huge file onto the site but for now you can see the entire thing here! *Edit: video added to post below

To tide you all over, I've screen capped some images from the video ... mostly my favourite moments. Daria looks so pleasant and fun to work with, although I have to admit sometimes she looked just as bored of Aaron de Mey's speeches as I was! I love seeing backstage moments such as these. It really makes you appreciate an editorial so much more when you see how much work goes into a few pages. Its so easy to forget about the teams of people that go into the making of one editorial - makeup artists, photographer, models, assistants, the assistants to assistants ... this video made me go back to my issue of Vogue Paris and pore over the images just to see if I had missed anything from before.

Update Cecilia has kindly uploaded the video onto youtube! Enjoy!

Vogue Paris May 2010 | Fard Fatal

The first editorial, "Fard Fatal", from the May issue of Vogue Paris has been scanned. Ben Hassett is once again the photographer and Aaron de Mey the makeup artist. This time around the colours and setup in this beauty feature are far more extreme.

Fard Fatal
Vogue Paris May 2010
Daria Werbowy by Ben Hassett

"One side, a sexy version of Daria skin bronzed ... at the other the iconic side of Daria a pale face ... two colour palettes, to match summer ideals, led to the extreme by Aaron de Mey. In both cases a party girl at high voltage, ready to mesmerize." A really rough translation of the first page (French always sounds worse when translated) but it should give you some notice about the editorial. The extreme bronzer  and pale cheeks do make more sense when put into perspective.

Although some may be hesitant at the exaggerated colour palettes it is precisely why I like this editorial. Since the past two hours after I first saw Fard Fatal I have warmed up to its odd colours and over the top styling. Makeup artists rarely get to express their dramatic visions aside from runways, as magazines always tend to favour natural and "nude" colours. The attention to detail is stunning and only more enhanced by Daria's poses - I am particularly in awe by the third image. Its quite a departure from Daria's last beauty editorial "Esprit Libre" but both shoots have their own charming singular qualities.

Also, just a heads up that Daria's second editorial in Vogue Paris, La Décadense, is a tribute of sorts to Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg ... I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing the similarities!

Tsarine Daria

Making her second appearance in Vogue Paris this year, Daria is photographed by David Sims for Tsarine Daria in the April 2010 issue.

Tsarine Daria
Vogue Paris April 2010
Daria Werbowy by David Sims

Vogue Paris' loyalty to Daria is unfaltering and I am always excited to hear of a new collaboration between the magazine and model. Tsarine Daria is not an exception to the past hits this collaboration has produced. Maybe the powers that be have heard the countless pleas to switch up the photography teams - Inez and Vinoodh are not behind this series of photos but rather David Sims. By now I'm familiar with his aesthetic, studio shots interspersed with location shots. It provides for an interesting narrative and a variation of pictures.

I should give David Sims more credit than I let on. Although I don't think he can produce images like Bruce Weber or Mario Sorrenti he does manage to shoot beautiful portraits like the first, third and fifth images. I was expecting something brighter and livelier for such a Russian sounding title, but I loved the pared down simplicity in most of these shots. Daria is stoic and simple, and makes for a great Tsarina. My only garb about this editorial, because yes, there always needs to be one, is the last picture in the nude. Its just photo-shop done particularly bad, and coupled with an awkward pose that makes for a weird picture. But other than that this editorial is the latest in a great year of images.
