Vogue Nippon April 2010 : She's The Max

After patient waiting, the cover of Vogue Nippon April 2010 has been scanned! Thanks to a.t. at the Fashion Spot and rox_yr_sox we have both the cover and the behind the scenes section.

To be honest I initially read the coverline as "She's the Man". So, freudian slips aside, I have warmed up to this cover. Its still not as high on my list of Daria's January cover but the warm rose tones certainly make up for something. The photographer is actually Mikael Jannson (he's worked with Daria before) The covergirl section is short but sweet, I always love reading these (or rather seeing them in this case). Are there any readers fluent in Japanese - I'd appreciate it so much if you could translate this!

Also, this might make up for the lackluster cover ... the first part of Daria's editorial has been scanned. I wanted to post the entire thing at once but you have to see the photos. They look beautiful  - perhaps a contender for best editorial of the year? And about 30 more pages to go! We'll see ...

Most Wanted

Keep a lookout for the 64th issue of V magazine. The March/April 2010 issue of the Visionaire publication has yet to be released but previews of the editorials have been leaking for a while. Suprise suprise, Daria has an editorial inside (at the rate Daria is working this year I wouldn't be surprised if she make's the April issue of Vogue ... ok maybe a little surprised)!

Most Wanted is photographed by Mario Testino and inspired by Mexican film star Maria Felix. The cover hasn't been released but Testino is often a contributor so there is a good chance that it could be Daria. From the previews this looks really nice and it will be so interesting to see this mix of cowgirl and Mexican culture played out.

Breaking Tradition

Just a quick post to let you know that Daria has a 37 page editorial (whoah) in Vogue Nippon's April issue, she same issue where she is on the cover! Vogue Nippon usually doesn't have an editorial for their cover girls so this is quite a surprise.

Mikael Jansson is the photographer and George Cortina the stylist. Remember a few months ago when I posted that George Cortina mentioned that he was working for an upcoming shoot for Vogue Nippon in Morocco? This might just be that shoot ... Cortina worked on that amazing editorial, "Girl of the Golden Field" in the December issue of Vogue Nippon so this is exciting news.

The Cat Lady

I just picked up the March issue of Vogue and it holds quite a few surprises. Daria is in two editorials, The Warrior Way and Straight From The Hip, and along with those there is a cute candid and another shot from The Warrior Way. I've always wondered if they were going to feature Daria in one of the Contributors pages - she's appeared in quite a lot of editorials to warrant a mention!

If you pay enough attention you can see Daria a few more times throughout the magazine which brings more excitement to those rumors about a model gracing the cover of the April issue of Vogue ... maybe its just hopefulness on my part, and trust me I know the chances of a model appearing on the cover are slim, but I'm hoping that it could be Daria!

Vogue Nippon April 2010

Seems like Vogue Nippon has some withdrawal symptoms when it comes to Daria. Just after appearing on their January cover (which came out in ... November) Daria gets a second cover for the April 2010 issue (in February). I wouldn't mind this two month cycle ...

Vogue Japan April 2010
Third post in a day - that might be a new record. I promise this is the last one! The Vogue Nippon cover is quite different from her January cover. I find myself liking the former one more. The colour in the cover is quite pretty and the dress is romantic but it just doesn't look like Daria to me. I thought the January cover had a natural ease about it and this pose I find a bit contrived. Hopefully there will be a "making-of" section inside!

Also, there are some interesting rumors going around ... a model might cover the April issue of US Vogue, a rare occurence with the American magazine. Names are flying around but nothing seems to be one hundred percent. Daria has appeared in the last four or five issues in editorials and its no secret that she is a Wintour favourite. But then again, it seems her prime was in 2004-2005 and she never seems like one for publicity. April is the shape issue so some are speculating that it is Lara Stone (she has been in the magazine quite a few times as of late, and she was on the May 2009 issue of Top Models). Who knows, in the end it might just be another bland Hollywood actress but its fun to guess at it.

Straight From The Hip

Miss a day of blogging and two editorials, a cover and a mention to a friend's blog in Vogue (!) will pass you by ... Norman Jean Roy's editorial Straight from the Hip has been scanned by Mchunu and although Daria has only one shot it is one superb shot.

Straight from the Hip
Vogue US March 2010
Daria Werbowy by Norman Jean Roy

Straight From The Hip comes courtesy of Norman Jean Roy and I've mentioned before that I love how he photographs Daria. It is an article on the street style - Model's Off Duty. Make sure you take a look at the article. It opens up with a phone call as Daria rifles between her clothes closet (yes, that closet) and goes on about her tomboy style. For others it might be trivial but I love that Daria is interviewed in Vogue, albeit the fact that it is a short phone conversation on leather jackets! I love even more the fact that Daria styled her own shot and chose to forgo makeup and hair styling. It makes for a beautiful picture.

This article holds small surprises as well. Eword, the great blogger behind The Darialogist, is mentioned in the article! A sincere congratulations to her because she definitely deserved this. She always had such interesting views on every editorial Daria was in (and she's carried those views over to ewordland!) and they needed to be acknowledged. Again congrats!

The Warrior Way

Scans of Daria's first of two editorials in Vogue's March issue have been posted.

The Warrior Way
Vogue US March 2010
Daria Werbowy by David Sims

Isn't this so refreshing? Its great to see a large publication like American Vogue take on such a big theme in pop culture right now. What is even more refreshing is the fact that it is a beautifully inspired editorial. This could have gone the way of Harper's Bazaar, and could have been cheesy and over the top. I think this is one of the instances where David Sims photography really works in a natural setting. These pictures are a such a natural and somber impression of James Cameron's Avatar world. Not only that but the second picture is impressing - I never realized how much Daria resembles a Na'vi creature before that photo! Imagine how beautiful this will look in print ...

I thought it would be interesting to see a line up all of the runway looks (runway photos only make it on to this blog once a year!) versus how they're styled in the editorial. Grace Coddington did a great job of combining dresses from the Spring Summer 2010 runway season. It's not her usual style but its so great to see the geometric prints and angular cuts of the spring season in print. The Rodarte war paint inspired war paint is so at place as well. And the Alexander McQueen armadillo boots! I don't think they could have found a better place than this editorial ... Avatar couldn't have come out at a better time for the fashion world!

Double the Daria

The March issue of US Vogue will have Daria in two editorials, one lensed by David Sims the other by Norman Jean Roy.

Models : Jessica Stam, Sasha Pivovarova, Lily Donaldson, Daria Werbowy, Chanel Iman, Karlie Kloss, Vanessa Traina, Lauren Santo Domingo & Giovanna Battaglia

High-fashion Na'vi Daria.

Daria as a Na'vi person is not an image I was expecting to see ... but Daria is oddly very much like the alien race in Jame Cameron's Avatar. Again, I was anticipating a travel editorial by Mario Testino so I'm very curious about this!

I had also said that I would love to see Daria work with Norman Jean Roy more often and from the preview above it doesn't look like I will be let down. Hopefully Daria will have some group shots with the other models. Ahh, I love March issues! They always get me so excited for Spring and the fact that Daria is scattered throughout this issue of US Vogue doesn't hurt!

Something to Look Forward To

A quick post to let you know that Daria has an editorial in the March issue of US Vogue. It's probably standard Mario Testino or Mert and Marcus fare but I'm still excited to see how it turns out. Maybe it will bring a surprise ... Testino and M&M have been stepping up their game as of late.

The bangs in a better (black and white) light. Seriously, this party looked like so much fun. First Patti Smith and then Santa Clause's distant sailor cousin.

New York Sighting

It's not a runway appearance but Daria did show up in New York. She was at the LnA Afterparty at Milk Studios last night ... and she brought along a fringe with her. I'm not the biggest fan of it but maybe styled right it can look good (something like the Numéro cover).

But who cares about hair when you're at a party and Patti Smith performs. Read: Patti Smith performed. I would have been serving drinks at this party to hear that. I would have been a bathroom attendant at this party to hear that. Metric, a Canadian band who is not that bad themselves, performed as well and fellow model Agyness Deyn made an appearance. So did Daria's poncho but I can overlook that because she wore an amazing pair of leather pants.

No word yet on whether or not Daria will make an appearance on the NYC runways but that's highly unlikely. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for either Milan or Paris though!

Rest In Peace Alexander McQueen

If you've heard the news of Alexander McQueens passing then I am sure you are as shocked as I am. British designer Alexander McQueen passed away early this morning and left behind a legacy of great design.

I wouldn't feel right not writing something about this, so may this little post be a tribute of sorts to McQueen's genius. Alexander McQueen was one of the main designers that propelled my interest in fashion and design. His collections were ones of great romance and imagination and played out to the fullest. McQueen was poised for even greater success and his new show was the one I was most anxiously awaiting this fall season. May McQueen rest in peace and truly be happy wherever he is. He was an immense talent gone too soon.

Tuesday Tally

This post would most appropriately be titled a "January/February Tally" but for euphonious reasons Tuesday Tally will work. Daria has been hard at work the past few months and these past weeks in particular have yielded more work than the past two years combined! I feel that there should be an award given out for a list like this ...
Phew! Just looking at that gives me anxiety. Did I miss anything? Imagine the flying hours logged into all of that work, the number of productions, photographers, stylists and makeup artists ... Daria's track record remains one of the best in the business and its only February! I can't wait to see what is in store for 2010. Perhaps a reunion with Steven Meisel (although that may be me being too hopeful), another Vogue Paris cover (you know how much Carine loves Daria) and another editorial shot by Inez and Vinoodh (ok, this is inevitable)? What do you see happening this year? Or maybe the better question - what do you want to see happen?

Body Conscience

Daria makes an appearance in the third issue of LOVE magazine in an editorial shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Fashion Icons: Body ConscienceLOVE Magazine Issue Three
Daria Werbowy by Mert and Marcus

Do you like your body? No.
Do you love it? Yes! It's a love/hate thing.
Your body is a ... ? Tool. A 12-piece Black & Decker set.
Would you change it? Ask me when I'm 50.
How do you feel about being naked in LOVE? One should always be naked when in love!

Its taken me a while to form an opinion on these images but after much time, sorry for the delayed posting everyone!, I have come to the conclusion that these images are truly gorgeous. There is no doubt in my mind that Daria has the strongest editorial of all in this issue (click here for the others).

I have to say, I am certainly surprised that Daria went along with this editorial. I never would have pictured her as the model willing to do a complete nude but after last years In Love editorial I guess anything is possible. I am also surprised that photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott managed to produce such a spectacular editorial as this. I can't help noting the difference between this editorial and their most recent works with Daria (Point Break and The Deep End) the former being so robotic and devoid of any real tension or expression. But these images are so great in expressing a connection established between subject and photographer, model and lens. The photos are stripped of any embellishments or distractions and an intimate relationship is forged.

Yes, there is a Helmut Newton reference but I don't think that is suffice to describe these images  - Mert and Marcus prove that they can truly hold their own. Particularily in the second last shot, which happens to be my favourite of the editorial. It is so abstract and rarely the type of image we see in fashion magazines these days. It is provocative but only in the fact that it is so unexpected - not because of the nudity, which by now is fair game in fashion and such a natural aspect of life. Tom Ford said it best - "With a more natural relationship to nudity, we might also be freed up to find each other a lot more fascinating. There's an equality to being naked; the fewer clothes and accessories a person wears the less you judge them, and the more you notice their truest traits, like their eyes or their charisma, their great hands or their one-of-a-kind hair or, most importantly, their personality and character." It is so true, that this editorial really focuses the viewer on the person rather than the clothing, the setting, the accessories. Its why I am so shocked that a large publication fashion magazine would have the guts to print this! I'm in awe at the level of modeling that Daria projects through this. She truly proves herself capable of anything ... this was a surprise from a publication like LOVE, a surprise from Mert and Marcus but I think that beautiful images such as these have come to be expected of Daria. I can't wait to see if anything tops this in 2010!

It's hard to put in words but the images speak for themselves ... I'd love to hear your opinions though!
