Canadian Walk of Fame
Just a quick post and update to fill in all of those readers who didn't get a chance to see the televised Walk of Fame ceremony. Daria was first to present the awards (thank god - I don't think I could have done with watching two hours of an awards show). It was quite funny, because she reminded me of a shy schoolgirl presenting something in front of her whole school. She was nervous, rushed her speech and stumbled but ultimately it is what made her so charming! Hopefully, there will be a video up soon, but for now, an image of Daria (nervously) making her speech. You can see the other images in the gallery below.

yes.. she looks nervous..but also really good.. hate her.. hahaha
ReplyDeleteit's almost incredible how shy she can be... i mean, you wouldn't expect that from a model... well, we all know that she is a very anti-stereotypic model!
ReplyDeleteShe was a little nervy when she accepted her own award last year at the Hall of Fame too. Think it's amazing that she can totally do nude/topless shoots and then get nervous at public speaking. We humans are complicated creatures. I think this adds a very sweet dimension to her.
ReplyDeletedarialogist - she is a paradox in and of herself. the shy "supermodel"!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - that is a really interesting way of putting it. you wouldn't think she was shy after seeing her in love editorial last year in vogue hommes. but that just shows how much separation there is between her work and real life. Daria is very multi-dimensional :)
i agree with anon too. it's also true that even when she does nudity, how to say it? i can't even say that in italian... i mean, it's not like she gives it all...
ReplyDeleteanyways, the vid of her presentation is now available at youtube.
IMO Daria is very timid in her nude scenes as evident in the 'In Love' ed and the pic in V53 (where all IMG models got naked). I'd further point out that her 2009 Pirelli gave me the same impression. You can interpret it as a new way to look at nudity, non-overt-sexuality, but I'd say it's just Daria's inner shyness oozing out. It's consistent with her being shy in public. She's beautiful and elegant; I like her no matter what. Her shyness actually adds to her charm, but for modeling, a clothed Daria is better skilled than a naked one.
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting. I think she is at the top of her game. She seems comfortable career wise. She's liked and respected in the industry. Then why do nudity if you are not happy to do it.? When perhaps if she put her foot down she wouldn't have to do nude shoots at all. Or is the fashion industry so tyrannical that no matter who you are, you do as your told? It's a mindfield. I agree with the other Anon-I prefer her clothed as well.
ReplyDeletedarialogist, your right. I don't know how models or even actors can seperate that stuff. That is a complete triumph of mind over matter.
ReplyDeleteHere is the video.

Somebody can put subtitles please?
I am in complete agreement with all of the above comments. It is perplexing that when Daria is nude in editorials there is never a semblance of her true character, or a strong persona coming through.
ReplyDeleteBy now I think she is a big enough model (in terms of industry standards) to deny a nude editorial, which perplexes me even more when she does choose to, as she always looks slightyly uncomfortable.
One of her earliest editorials was this "sun kissed' story from w magazine (2003)

One can just see from the connotations in her body that she is so drawn into herself and witholds from the camera. She ends up looking uncomfortable. From 2003 to 2009 there is not much change ... Suffice to say, I like her clothed editorials as well. It leaves a much more mysterious and sensual feeling than editorials where she is completely nude.
Thank you for the links and info for the videos eword and The Invisible Man :)
i must say that i posted one of my most brilliant entries at my old blog about the jewellery w 2003 editorial, cos i noticed that she was doing the same nervous movement with her fingers as in the candids with harnett. but i think that she was evidently unconfortable there more because of the guy than of nudity itself.
ReplyDeletei mean, as i have always said, i am not against nudity. i think you can't blame nudity itself, that would be rather puritan. nudity may be great and daria has done some great nude pics (an example: the topless opening pic of 'la plage' by thompson in w march 06: wonderful). other stuff wasn't that great, but from a certain point of her career onwards it was up to her to say yes or no. it is also true that you can't always expect brilliant decisions from a 22-23 years old girl with so much pressure around her.
honestly i hope she can do nudity again now that she has reached her erotic maturity. some of the pirelli pics, as it has been noticed, were a great preview of what daria with her tomboysh personality could do.
personality and body language.
ReplyDeleteI remember that post eword - it actually affected my opinions on that editorial. It is an interesting point you raise, that nudity is not really the problem. In some cases it is the surroundings or accessories (and by accessories I'm referring to the men :P)
ReplyDeleteNudity can be a beautiful thing, not the problem at all. And some of her best shots are nude, particularly the "La Plage" editorial. I think one of her best nude shots so far is from the W July (or June) 2008 "summer camp" by Bruce Weber (he always takes some of the best pictures of Daria).
There is something much stronger in her nudity when she is alone as opposed to with a man. She was even more comfortable with Carmen in Air Libre lol
Well it's quite possible that because those male models are not her boyfriend(s), she's not comfortable to be naked and so intimate with them? Of course the opposite example is, say, Lara Stone, but we all know Daria is no Lara. Female models see each other naked all the time when fitting or changing dresses, so I doubt there's any trouble.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I think we all know Lara Stone is very comfortable with her nudity! :D
ReplyDeleteIt is true, your second part - it would be expected of models to be comfortable with each other nude. And I think that is why they produce some of the best editorials together (ex Summer Camp, Air Libre).
And your first part is true as well. If there is no personal connection between a pair, be it chemistry or a knowledge of each other, then there is really nothing to relay in images other than naked bodies and a meeting of two unknown personalities. In the end, some editorials just turn out to be two beautiful models, but the intended story of eros can be lost. I hope I am making some sense with this!
you are. 'in love' is a perfect example of it.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this discussion.
