Flashback Friday: Daria by Gigi Stoll

One of the great things about the internet is the ability for photographers to showcase their old work on an electronic format. It makes for a great archive for fans of fashion ... and for fans like us! I stumbled upon photographer Gigi Stoll's facebook page a while ago and came across this great photoshoot of Daria. The photos are from the February 2004 issue of Vogue Paris, where Daria showcases her jewelry, but I've never seen the photos in such great quality. Flashback Friday : VPL Fall 2003

I think I've done these "flashback" posts before but I would love to introduce something concrete to the blog. Flashback Fridays will be something that we can expect to see every week on The Daria Files, even when we're having slow news weeks. It's also a chance to reintroduce any old images I've found that haven't been seen before or bring back great photos from Daria's career.

First up is a video of the Fall 2003 VPL show. This was Daria's first season and fittingly VPL's first fashion show ever. There aren't any images of the looks Daria wore but from the video she's seen in two looks. Or, I don't really know if you can call them looks considering how little clothing she's wearing!

A Very Good Bye

I have some bad news but I've tried my best to mediate it with this post ... unfortunately (and fortunately) I will be away for a month on a trip and I don't think I will be able to have Internet connection most of the time. I'll try my best to do check-ins and update the site as much as I can but I am just warning my readers and letting you know that this break won't be as long as the last! I'll be back in less than a month and make sure to blog everything I have missed!

But for now, to satiate your Daria needs in this long drought, I have found a bucket-load of candids of Daria. And every single photo is beautiful! What makes these even greater is the fact that they are candids and show Daria in her natural element, with her friends and family - whether it be sailing, on a trip to Corsica, backstage at the Canadian Walk of Fame or at home in Toronto. I'm soooo excited to share these photos with you because I don't believe we've ever gotten to see Daria like this. I have to say, although it is really hard, my favourite photos have to be of Daria playing the guitar on a boat and cigarette in mouth. Can she really get any more cooler?

Now before you worry, all of these photos were taken from a reliable site and are already out in the public. They are all taken from photographer Gregory White's flickr page. Now, for a little backdrop to how I found these photos. Incidentally I did a Google search for Daria's boyfriend (I'm assuming we all know who her significant other is by now?) and came across a photo of his work on flickr. Not thinking much of it I clicked on the photographers portfolio and came across all of these photos. After a little looking I realized Gregory White is actually a friend of Daria.
Now enjoy these photos because they may be some of the most we'll see in the following months seeing as Daria is on another sailing trip this summer, much like the ones in the photos below!

Hedi's Girls Outtakes

I found these outtakes from an editorial in the May 2007 issue of Vogue Paris "Hedi's Girls". Hedi Slimane's work with Daria remains one of my favourite shoots to date. Three of these pictures are old, but one hasn't been seen yet. It's a shame Hedi doesn't do more editorial work with Daria!

Photo of the Day

The rare pictures just keep showing up. Scrolling through photography sites, I managed to find this absolutely beautiful image on photographer Paul Alexanders site. Alexander shot Daria for a Hello! Canada interview last year. Enjoy this shot because Daria finds are very rare these days!

The Lost Chanel Ad

IMG models renewed their homepage, along with the profiles of their top models. I decided to flip through Daria's portfolio and found an unseen ad! I don't remember seeing this before, but I do know that she modeled for Chanel a couple of times. Anyways, enjoy this image because it is a beautiful picture.

Update It seems the picture is an advertisement to accompany the Spring 2004 Chanel Haute Couture collection.

Covergirl Commercial(ism)

Thanks eword for the heads-up! The recently posted picture of Daria by Dana Gonzales (right) actually comes from a Covergirl commercial that was shot back in 2003. It was a test commercial that featured Marija Vujovic, Hana Soukupova, Raquel Zimmerman and Julia Stegner. The video can be found at http://madoffproductions.com/ under the commercial section.

It is kind of weird to think where Daria would be right now if Covergirl had ultimately picked this new direction to go with. For those of you who don't know much about this makeup brand, their focus is quite commercial and caters to the girl-next-door mindset. Quite different from the upscale French Lancome brand.

If anyone watches Americas Next Top Model (sadly, my vice) then you will know that a contract with CoverGirl is the winning prize. Moreover it is quite heavily endorsed by celebrities rather than models and has quite a mainstream approach. It would have been interesting to see how Daria's career would have gone if she ended up with CoverGirl over Lancome, but ultimately I'm glad she chose the latter. Thanks again for the info eword!
