Something Old, Something New

The start of this month has been quite busy and it seems like July is the time to make up for the lack of work this year. I posted a preview of Daria's fall 2013 campaign for Isabel Marant a while back and now we have the full campaign! I love this first image here and its great to see Daria continuing her streak with the brand.

Another Isabel Marant campaign is not all that surprising but this Fall 2013 ad for Diane Von Furstenberg is right out of left field! The campaign is photographed by Sebastian Faena and there are eleven images in total. I love what I see so far so I can only hope the other images are this good.

Vogue Paris August 2013 : Londres en Majeste

My thoughts on this editorial are about as deep as its actual length. What a disappointment that Daria only gets five pages in the August issue of Vogue Paris. If Alt doesn't bother to put any effort into the magazine then I too can leave it at that.

Cover Star : Vogue Paris August 2013

UPDATE A few preview pictures of the editorial have been posted here. I will update with a full post and comments as soon as scans are out!

For her fourth cover of the year Daria appears on the August issue of Vogue Paris, photographed by David Sims, wearing Ralph Lauren, fronting the London issue ... a little all over the place, I know, but we'll dissect that all in a bit.

Vogue Paris August 2013 : Daria by David Sims

I think August is quickly becoming my favourite month. The cover of the August issue of Vogue Paris has become somewhat of a tradition for Daria, and this is her third time on this months issue (August 2008 and August 2009 being her last two). And her eighth VP cover overall!

General consensus on the internet is that this cover is a flop, from the transatlantic styling (an American designer for a London issue?), the text overload, and even Daria's nose ring! I can agree with a few of those qualms but I have to come to the defence of this cover ... or at least try to understand such an underwhelming effort.

After being subjected to the text placement travesty that was American Vogue circa 2007 (*deep sigh*) I can't find too much of a fault with the art direction here. A lot of text, yes, but overwhelming, no. I've heard of a few comparisons of this cover to old Esquire magazine covers. Now, if that magazine had some British roots it might have been an ingenious reference. But alas, both American owned and run, so that aspect fails. The jacket, by Ralph Lauren - a symbol of the influence of London outside of London? Or just a monthly quota to fill for American advertisers? As for the nose ring, I like it! Its another testament to the status of Daria in the industry, when taboos like piercings and tattoos, normally airbrushed out of existence, are allowed to remain in the picture. Its not just another model on this cover, its Daria

I don't know if these are so much as redeeming factors than justifications for a subpar cover. London + punk + Daria should have produced something much more striking. And wasn't Anglomania like seven years ago?! But we still have the entire inside of the issue to convince us and if theres another 70+ page editorial inside then I'm sure we'll get a few great shots out of it.

In other cover related news, Freja Beha is on the August issue of Vogue UK. Although I've yet to see two of my favourite models work together, at least they'll be in good company at the new stands. And both sporting big grins nonetheless!

Alt, let's meet again next August?

D + G in Ireland = New Work?

That red hair is unmistakeable - Grace and Daria are back together! Daria paid a trip to her home in West Cork, Ireland and this time she brought along some friends. Grace Coddington, creative director of Vogue, was snapped by Daria in all her bright headed glory.

Hopefully this means a Vogue US editorial in the works, and one that takes full advantage of the beauty of Ireland. If there is to be an editorial out of this visit then I'm hoping for one that showcases Daria at home playing the role of an urban castaway. It looks like these pictures were taken a few days before Daria's appearance at the Lancome event in Paris. Stella Greenspan, one of Grace's assistants, also snapped some photos on location which you can see below. All things point to some new work but if this just turns out to be a meeting between friends then at least we've gotten some pretty candids out of it!

Lancome x Lanvin

Paris landing! Daria is in Paris for fashion week, and last night she was at the Lancome Show by Alber Elbaz event, celebrating Lanvin's recent collaboration with Lancome.

If there is a fashion god out there then I swear he has answered our sartorial prayers, because Daria looked absolutely brilliant last night. She wore Spring 2013 Lanvin, fitting for the occasion, and a pop of lip colour. I suppose if its an event for Lancome then a little makeup is required! I love that the omnipresent rattail made an appearance - despite such a high profile event (Catherine Deneuve and Ms Carine Roitfeld were present!) Daria held her own.

I wonder if an appearance in Lanvin will lead to something more? The fashion world is a calculated place and something as simple as a wardrobe choice can signal a job prospect. Lanvin's fall campaign is yet to be released and I haven't heard any rumours about who will be fronting the ads ... but then again, this may just be Daria doing her part as a Lancome ambassador, and pledging fealty to both parties. Coincidentally Steven Meisel is Lanvin's go-to photographer and seeing as how D and Meisel haven't worked together in a while I'm not so sure a campaign is carved in stone.

Frosted Lips and Indian Trips

We've been bombarded with little news snippets lately so here's a quick rundown of the past week or so:

- The general public is finally starting to take note of Daria's brilliant Instagram account. The Wall Street Journal interviewed Daria about her trip to India a few months back. If you'd like to hear about the meaning behind some of those beautiful photos then I suggest you give it a read, its quite interesting!

- It seems like Daria's editorial in Vogue Spain made a bigger impact than expected - Into The Gloss delves into the "frosted lip" debate. My verdict? Let's leave that trend to Daria.

- A poster on the Fashion Spot forums also gave a brief rundown of Daria's interview in the aforementioned Vogue editorial. Nothing new to report other than the fact that Daria will be sailing the Mediterranean this summer. So expect a lot less work than usual for the later half of this year! :(

- Last but not least ... Happy Canada Day!!
