Vogue UK September 2013 : Rebel Rebel

It's my favourite time of the year, not just because it happens to be my birthday, but because the September issues have started rolling out! We're on the cusp of a new season and luckily for us Daria is dominating the magazines this month. Starting with an editorial in the September issue of Vogue UK.

Rebel Rebel

Daria by Patrick Demarchelier

Fitting that a David Bowie song is used for this editorial title, seeing as how Daria is a big fan of the Englishman's music. And, like the musician, she herself has carved out a singular path in her respective industry. Vogue UK has also been one to 'rebel' against the formula of the magazine industry. This year seven out of their nine covers were models, practically unheard of in this time of Hollywood starlet overdrive. What better than a combination of Daria and Vogue UK for the September issue - a model who rebels against the norm in a magazine choosing to do the.

The styling in this shoot is brilliant as are Demarchelier's portraits of Daria. Despite being a veteran in this industry Daria still surprises me with her modeling skills and nuances. She elevates a studio editorial to something much more intimate, a collection of portraits that convey her nomadic personality. They're a beautiful accompaniment to the article inside, which you have to read if you're a fan, and even more so if you're not. There are some new things to learn, of Daria's life in Ireland and of a fairy-tale romance with a carpenter, but its also a great insight to a woman who has grown up in an industry that both inspires her, and leads her to take month-long sailing trips away from her work. She is entirely "the reluctant supermodel".

Vogue UK September 2013 Cover

After a ridiculously quiet start to the year Daria is finally putting out the kind of work that we're used to. She's landed the cover of the September 2013 issue of Vogue UK. This is Daria's fourth Vogue UK cover, her last being four years ago.

Vogue UK September 2013
Daria Werbowy by Patrick Demarchelier

Daria looks really cool on the cover, almost as if she stepped off the street, stood in front of Patrick Demarchelier's camera and in one shot the cover was borne. Its not so much the model on the cover as it is Daria on the cover.

I also think the relaxed styling on this cover is its own undoing. I gave a little squeal when I learned Daria would be on the cover, but already expected something laid back and relaxed before I saw the image. And laid back and relaxed is what I got. Daria in this kind of set up seems almost formulaic by now and although I love to see her with more work, especially covers, it can tend to be quite boring. The preview below does look much more promising though ... Daria will have 7 photos in this issue, and if I read correctly an article as well!

Vogue UK September 2013 preview

Now, if I had my way Daria would be on the cover of every Vogue, the American version included. And although the latter doesn't seem that possible, more than one Vogue cover this month doesn't seem that implausible. Some keen eyes on the Fashion Spot forums have given regard to these two shots from Mert Alas' Instagram. Both are regarding the behind the scenes production of an unknown project but from the casting (Naomi, Natasha, Kate) and styling it seems very Vogue Paris. I'm guessing there will be a multiple solo-girl covers. How epic would it be to have another Vogue Paris cover following her August one, and two Vogue covers in the same month!? I'll keep you posted!

Breaking The Waves : Vogue Spain July 2013

For such a declarative title Daria's editorial in the July 2013 issue of Spanish Vogue fails to make as much an impact. This editorial marks Daria's fourth of the year (I know, I know, don't even get me started ... ) and her second in Vogue Spain.

I feel like anything to be said about these photos has already been said a dozen times over. Daria has done so many of these beach themed editorials that its getting harder and harder to tell them apart. Despite some beautiful shots in this editorial (like the images against the rock ledges [3, 12]) I've seen them all before. On one hand its exciting to see beautiful new photos in this lacking year, but on the other hand its frustrating to see a model as talented as Daria become reduced to a one trick pony. We know she looks good in a bikini and messy hair but we also know she can defy gender roles with Cass Bird and assume different identities with Inez and Vinoodh. So why relegate her to the beach bum once again? Remember back to the days when Daria on the beach caused a riot? Now the theme is as synonymous with Daria as are eyebrows with Cara Delevigne and yoga with Christy Turlington. Sigh.

But, it is true that you don't appreciate something until its gone, and I'm sure that in the future, when we're being bombarded with studio editorials, I'll be yearning for some sand and sun. For what it aims to be this editorial achieves the frivolity and relaxation that is the beach editorial, and for that I applaud Patrick and Vogue Spain. I also think I might be being too picky and should just be happy our girl has a new editorial for us to enjoy! What do you think?

Additional shots:

Daria's second editorial in this issue "... Y Entonces Ilego Ella" is more a focus on Daria separate from the model and is accompanied by an article. Hopefully we'll get scans of this feature soon but for now enjoy the digital grabs. The photos are beautiful but also fall in line with the overwrought idea of quite literally exposing the model to get a peak of their personality. Again, its pretty, but its nothing ground-breaking.

Also, no Daria in the July issue of American Vogue. I guess we'll be seeing her Mert & Marcus lensed editorial in the August issue. Considering the wait for this cover one month shouldn't be bad. And if not August, an editorial in the September issue is always welcomed!

Summer Is Here! Vogue Spain July 2013

2013 has been a rough year on the covers front. At this point I would be happy if Daria covered a Sears catalogue but, no fear, as Vogue Spain has come to the rescue! Daria covers the July 2013 issue of Vogue Espana photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.

Daria has two editorials in this issue: "Rompiendo las olas" (Breaking The Waves) by Patrick Demarchelier (15 pages) and "... Y entonces llegó ella" (Along Came Polly) by Patrick Demarchelier (2 pages and an article).

I'm so excited to see how the editorials turn out but from the cover and preview they both should be very beach inspired. I know I always lament that I'd like to see Daria in other styling and themes, but when the result is so fresh and pretty like this cover then I can't complain.

I Spy ...

Daria's Vogue Espana cover! There's no denying that Daria's eye is peaking out at us in this preview of the cover. The photo is from the Instagram of Belen Antolin, fashion director at Vogue Espana and the stylist of Daria's recent cover shoot with Patrick Demarchelier. I can't wait to see how it turns out but so far, so good!

Lancome x Never Undressed

Lancome has teamed up with beauty website Never Undressed to highlight their latest product Lancôme Teint Visionnaire Skin Perfecting Make-up Duo. Daria plays the muse in this collaboration "In Her Skin", wearing nothing but a two step foundation and signature leather jacket (this time its red!).

We get a beautiful video out of it of which I've made some screenshots below. This shoot was filmed by Patrick Demarchelier. Enjoy!

Vogue Espana News

Some good news for Spanish fans! Daria has work coming up in an issue of Vogue Espana, probably the May 2013 issue. I don't think VE intended this video to be released so early but nonetheless its a sneak peak of an editorial (and hopefully a cover!).

It was shot by Patrick  Demarchelier in St Barths. That seems to be the go-to spot for most of Daria's work! The preview reminds me a lot of Daria's work with Satoshi Saikusa and Derek Kettela in 2011, when we got a ton of beach inspired editorials. You can see all of those in the editorial page which is now ... COMPLETE! Yep, definitely took a while but now you can find the biggest collection of Daria's editorial work there. And hopefully we can add this editorial to the 2013 section!

Some screencaps from the video:

Good Things Come In Twos

I'm about two weeks too late but here are the scanned pages of Daria in the June 2010 issue of US Vogue. Oh well, better late than never? Its the thought that counts? OK enough idioms, on to the photos.

Daria has two pages in the June issue, both were images accompanying articles in the beauty section. Both are outtakes from the Go West editorial in the January 2010 issue of Vogue US! I love the black and white photo in the sand. It's so beautiful and abstract and I love how they allowed Daria's tattoo to be shown. If Vogue keeps producing beautiful images like this then I won't mind these little article photos in lieu of longer editorials.

Vogue Paris : 90 Years of Covers Event

Like rumored, Daria attended the 90 Years of Vogue Covers event on the Champs Elysees in Paris. Daria has appeared on Vogue Paris four times so far (and hopefully there will be a fifth!). It seems like the Balmain influences are still reigning high on her style - her dress is very reminescent of the Fall 2007 Balmain dress she wore on the runway here.

Vogue US September 2009 : Tonights The Night

In relation to the Sunglass Hut post, where attendees of the annual Fashion's Night Out event can meet Daria and pose for pictures, the editorial in Vogue US' September issue is actually one shot of all participating models in FNO. Daria was shot in a huge group of gorgeous girls, but I still find her to stand out - it helps that she's standing with her body facing to the camera! And her look is very Daria - I wonder if the models got to style their outfits?

Vogue US September 2009 Preview

Daria by Demarchelier in Vogue UK
Daria has an editorial in the Vogue US September 2009 issue along with a myriad of well known models. From the title, it sounds like a party/latenight editorial, but those are usually shot by Mario Testino. I'm looking forward to seeing Demarchelier's take on such a large group of models.

All In a Day's Work

Not many people will get to go near an elephant in their lives, let alone wash one, but this is one of the perks of Daria's job. Vogue UK posted a behind the scenes video on their website for the Indian Summer editorial in the June 2009 issue of Vogue UK. The video is quite long and has some great views of India - you should definitely check it out at the link.

P.S. I'd like to say thanks to all of those that follow the site - it's great to see that there are readers!

Vogue UK June 2009 : Indian Summer

Social commentary aside, the new editorial in Vogue UK, "Indian Summer" by Patrick Demarchelier, is beautiful. Demarchelier captures both the beauty of India and the brilliance of Daria in a 20 page editorial for the June 2009 issue.

What I think makes this editorial work is Demarchelier's photography and Daria's modeling. Unlike Mario Testino, who often shoots exotic locales in painfully bright chaos, Demarchelier's work in this feature is more toned down, much more sombre than Testino's but still maintains a dreamlike quality. It shies away from the extravagant, and the overplayed. It's hard to make this concept new, but Daria pulls this off with an ease and allure. Overall I quite like this editorial. Your thoughts?
