Vogue Paris February 2012 : Cover and Editorial

Daria and Inez and Vinoodh are at it again! This time for the February 2012 issue of Vogue Paris. I've mentioned in the past year that its a shame Daria's presence in Vogue Paris has been lacking, especially with the appointance of Emmanuelle Alt (a Daria champion) as editor-in-chief. Our wishes were answered with the rumor that Daria would front the February 2012 issue, and now less than a month later we get to see the finished product!



Daria was photographed by Inez and Vinoodh in a very cabaret-esque, Elvis hairdo, Old Hollywood, camp inspired look ... a lot of adjectives but somehow it comes together! The title reads a 66-page editorial shot in Las Vegas and if the cover is any indication of what is to come then expect a lot of classic "Inez and Vinoodh in the big city".

I'll withold my judgement until I see the full thing but for now the cover and this preview image should hold us off until we see the other 64 pages! From the little blurb in French (translation below the image) the editorial seems to focus on Daria as the "real Daria" - the one who journeys the amazon with shamans, sails and who has just bought a house in Ireland (lucky her!). I can't wait to see if this editorial features a little interview with Daria. It's always interesting to hear what she's up to.

"Daria Body & Soul: 5 covers, 20 editorials, 70 pages this month. 8 years of crazy love between Vogue Paris and Daria Werbowy ... this time it is far from the runways, the glitter, and the world of fashion that the muse - a little wild - of Lancôme finds her balance. Instead she finds herself journeying with the shamans, in the middle of the ocean, or cut off from the world in her new home in Ireland. A beautiful soul in a pure state."

P.S. For Daria fans out there, this is Daria's sixth Vogue Paris cover! In my opinion she definitely deserves more ;)

Vogue Paris February 2012 News

It looks like a no-go for the Prada Spring 2012 campaign but I've got some even better news ... Emmanuelle Alt will be dedicating an entire issue of Vogue Paris to Daria, lensed by Inez and Vinoodh for the February 2012 issue!

Inez and VInoodh gave an interview to style.com, an excerpt from which you can read below:

Vogue: You have a really varied crew of favorites—Daria, Tasha, Guinevere, Kate Moss, among others. What do you respond to in all these different girls?
IVL: All of the girls who are in there have that quality. I think that’s what it is. Once they can know themselves well enough to let it go and go for the idea of making something together. What’s exciting for us is when someone is not afraid to be someone else, and it takes character to be able to do that [...] The same goes for Daria. We’re shooting a whole issue on her for French Vogue for February.

This is great news - and a long time coming! We haven't seen Daria in Vogue Paris in almost a year. And now that she's taking a break to sail and relax it will be great to see her come back in full force. I've always hoped for a guest-edited issue from Daria, which usually happens for the December/January issue, but I suppose this is the next best thing.

I've been reading up a bit on Inez and Vinoodh's exhibit in Sao Paolo (by the way did anyone go!) and I came across a video and interview from the photographer duo. This is from their exhibit last year in Amsterdam at FOAM museum. The whole premise and layout of the exhibit seems identical to the one they just had in Sao Paulo, but that wasn't what caught my eye.  I think I found another portrait of Daria? If you look below at the two screencaps the photo of the girl with the big hair and whiskers looks a lot like Daria. Now I may be wrong, I think it is quite possible model Eniko Mihalik, but what do you guys think?



Either way the video below is really interesting to watch and Inez and Vinoodh give a detailed interview on their exhibit and their feeling towards photography in the world of fashion. The image of Daria appears at around 3:22 s.

A new photo is a rare sight these days. It looks like Daria's been laying low for the past month in terms of magazine apperances, and now that she's off sailing the world for the next two months I don't think we'll see much in the future! Thats why it was a treat to find this photo of Daria dressed like Inez van Lamsweerde in a photographer-muse switch.

This photo was taken by Inez and Vinoodh in 2010 and will be displayed at an exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil ... well right about now actually! If there are any Brazilian readers out there then you should go to the exhibition - it starts in half an hour - and then you can let us know if there are any other unseen Daria pictures!

Vogue Paris June July 2011 : Osmose

With Emmanuelle Alt as the new editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris I believe we should be seeing a lot more of Daria in the coming months! After all Daria us Alts favourite model. Now, I'm not sure how I feel about Alt as an editor but you know I am all for more Daria in the magazine. For the June/July issue Daria has only one photo but a beautiful photo it is.


I have to say its one of my favourite of Daria's endless "on-the-beach" photos. The setting, colours and pose are beautiful and this image kind of reminds me of old seventies editorials like the ones Marisa Berenson used to shoot with Avedon. It would have been beautiful to see more but sometimes the best things come in smaller packages.

Vogue Nippon April 2010 : She's The Max

After patient waiting, the cover of Vogue Nippon April 2010 has been scanned! Thanks to a.t. at the Fashion Spot and rox_yr_sox we have both the cover and the behind the scenes section.


To be honest I initially read the coverline as "She's the Man". So, freudian slips aside, I have warmed up to this cover. Its still not as high on my list of Daria's January cover but the warm rose tones certainly make up for something. The photographer is actually Mikael Jannson (he's worked with Daria before) The covergirl section is short but sweet, I always love reading these (or rather seeing them in this case). Are there any readers fluent in Japanese - I'd appreciate it so much if you could translate this!
Also, this might make up for the lackluster cover ... the first part of Daria's editorial has been scanned. I wanted to post the entire thing at once but you have to see the photos. They look beautiful  - perhaps a contender for best editorial of the year? And about 30 more pages to go! We'll see ...

Vogue Nippon April 2010

Seems like Vogue Nippon has some withdrawal symptoms when it comes to Daria. Just after appearing on their January cover (which came out in ... November) Daria gets a second cover for the April 2010 issue (in February). I wouldn't mind this two month cycle ...

Third post in a day - that might be a new record. I promise this is the last one! The Vogue Nippon cover is quite different from her January cover. I find myself liking the former one more. The colour in the cover is quite pretty and the dress is romantic but it just doesn't look like Daria to me. I thought the January cover had a natural ease about it and this pose I find a bit contrived. Hopefully there will be a "making-of" section inside!

Also, there are some interesting rumors going around ... a model might cover the April issue of US Vogue, a rare occurence with the American magazine. Names are flying around but nothing seems to be one hundred percent. Daria has appeared in the last four or five issues in editorials and its no secret that she is a Wintour favourite. But then again, it seems her prime was in 2004-2005 and she never seems like one for publicity. April is the shape issue so some are speculating that it is Lara Stone (she has been in the magazine quite a few times as of late, and she was on the May 2009 issue of Top Models). Who knows, in the end it might just be another bland Hollywood actress but its fun to guess at it.

Vogue Paris February 2010 | Vogue-à-Porter

It's been a busy start to 2010 and the momentum doesn't seem to be slowing down. I may sound like a broken record but I am still incredulous to the magnified amount of work Daria has been doing especially when compared to the same time last year. Daria's latest efforts are in the February 2010 issue of Vogue Paris in Vogue-à-Porter a grand scale editorial lensed by Inez and Vinoodh.

It is a beautifully shot series and the colours and setting are resplendent. Though the Daria + Inez and Vinoodh formula has become tired as of late I think that this editorial has redeemed the pair - at least for now. The sheer length alone (62 pages!) of this editorial showcases why Inez and Vinoodh are in such high demand at the moment. Though Vogue-a-Porter is divided in three parts I find that it has a certain flow from page to page, each story relates despite being placed in such different settings. In Daria's case the Moroccan desert provides a beautiful backdrop to springs latest looks.

That's not to say that this editorial is without its faults. Though I'd love to just simply appreciate the beautiful colours and styling the use of the male in this editorial still perplexes me. On one hand it is interesting to see the differing dynamics between the pair and it prompts the viewer to question the relations between the two. Yet I think that the use of the male still accedes to fashions use of people as props. Its happened before and I don't expect this tired idea will retire anytime soon. However, looking at it more closely prompts some more questions ... there is a playful struggle between the two with the man holding Daria back, standing protectively at her side and as an ominous figure in the background. This isn't really congruent with Daria's carefree poses  and appearance which makes the narrative even more interesting. Is the male there to symbolize an overprotective figure or just in there to showcase Prada's latest offerings? I don't know, its just something to dwell upon ... The editorial is divided into three parts and I think that Freja, Lara and Dree's part is the best at showcasing how models can interact within an exotic locale without looking like complete foreigners but Daria's part does its job at providing the mystery.

This is Daria's fifth Vogue Paris cover and the third in the past year! As someone said on tFS, Daria seems to be making up for all ofthe covers she should have had in the past. It's also another effort from the never ending collaborations with Inez and Vinoodh. I wouldn't want to complain of such an impressive editorial as this but we've all seen how one shot with Norman Jean Roy in the February issue of Vogue US produced such a refreshing image. Daria has almost solely worked with Inez van Lamsweeerde and Vinoodh Matadin in the past year with a few appearances by Mario Testino and Mert and Marcus. And although they can be credited with some of her best works they can only produce so much ... I think that Inez and Vinoodh have a singular view of Daria. Even if they place her in different clothes and settings the results are always too similar. I can't help but think back to 2007 when Daria was working with countless different photographers like Paolo Roversi, Peter Lindbergh and Bruce Weber and they all produced varied impressive takes of one woman. Hopefully 2010 will be a more diverse year ... maybe even Steven Meisel will work with Daria again. He worked with Freja so now it seems that anything is possible!

Isabel Marant Spring Summer 2010

Following up on this previous post, the Isabel Marant campaign has been released and with a quick visit to the website you can see the four pictures on-line. But for the sake of a proper post I will upload them here as well. 

I've always felt that Daria makes the perfect Isabel Marant girl and its no surprise that the eponymous designer agrees. This is Daria's third campaign and hopefully not the last. Unfortunately it has to be my least favourite thus far. Its nothing to do with Daria or the setting but rather the clothes themselves. If you are aware of Isabel Marant's Spring Summer 2010 collection then you would have been, like me, inundated by an overflow of hot pinks, light denims and ruffles - things I try to stray very far from. Not to get too off topic and post a runway critique, but I have to say that the clothes are the only things hindering me from liking this campaign. The blue sky against a neutral ground makes for a beautiful setting and Daria's relaxed stances are fitting to the campaign - in fact I love how Daria looks in this campaign ... but I just don't like this as much as I would any Marant ad.

  

Isabel Marant Spring Summer 2010 : Daria Werbowy by Inez and Vinoodh

I also can't help but compare this ad campaign to the Balmain Spring Summer 2008 campaign. It is the same formula: Daria + stylist Emanuelle Alt + photographers Inez and Vinoodh. Alt's styling resume is impeccable and Vinoodh and Matadin have produced some of the most original editorials and campaigns to date, yet this entire set brings a sense of déja-vu. Its a feeling that has been manifesting for the past few months but that will come up in an entirely different post. I wonder if the team could have predicted the possible similarities between the two campaigns ... But I suppose with a raport as lengthy as theirs things are bound to be repeated!

Vogue Paris February 2010 ... Fifth Time's a Charm

I woke up this morning to some great news. A rumor was posted on the Fashion Spot that the February covergirl of Vogue Paris would be a fresh new face - and an issue entirely dedicated to that girl so naturallly, I thought nothing too much of it. Lo and behold, the shoot that Daria did in Morocco a few months back was for a new Vogue Paris cover, and editorial.

Daria has had her share of Vogue Paris covers in the past years (this is her fifth) but it seems that every time a new cover comes out I get just as excited as the last! The editorial is a sixty page knockout - "Vogue à Porter" by I&V with Daria Werbowy, Lara Stone, Dree Hemingway, Freja Beha, Raquel Zimmerman, Naomi Campbell, Isabeli Fontana and Anna De Rijk. It's so exciting to see Daria with a fairly newer crop of models.

And if that cover and an editorial isn't enough for you today, then be glad that Daria is the face of Isabel Marant yet again (I believe this is her second time) and she makes just as great an impact as she did in her first and second campaigns. I'll wait to write a post when we have scans and larger images but for now, enjoy the gallery below. From the looks of today 2010 is shaping out to be a great year - and it's only January!

More Loewe : Behind the Scenes of the SS10 Campaign

Just as I was really starting to look at the latest Loewe campaign, a new bundle of pictures surface on the web and this time they are from the making of Daria's latest campaign. Stuart Vevers, creative director of Loewe, has developed a crush on Daria and as such, Vogue.uk has a behind the scenes look at the shooting of the campaign ...

Its always interesting to have a glimpse of the goings ons of the fashion industry and these pictures are no exception. From the warm colours of the clothes to the bright flowers garlanding the set, I think we can expect a very Spanish infused campaign - it seems as if Loewe is truly going back to its roots.

Speaking of roots I've taken to reading of the brands history ... warning, there is a little fashion history lesson in this post. Established in 1846 by German crafstman Enrique Roessberg Loewe, Loewe is a brand with a fruitful history, from a partnership with the Spanish Royal House to a ready-to-wear collection launched in the seventies. It is a luxury brand that is best known for its leather accessories. But with the appointal of Stuart Vevers as the newest creative director the brand has a lot more in mind ... With a seemingly discreet presence on the fashion scene I hadn't heard of Vevers before this campaign, but reading his resume I realized that he's made quite the impact.

Vevers has worked everywhere from Calvin Klein to Givenchy but most notably his presence at British brand Mulberry should be noted where he invigorated the almost forty year old brand with innovative campaigns by Steven Meisel and a much hyped accessories line. And apparently 160 year young brand Loewe believes he can do the same thing. But history lesson over for now! If you want to know more though, Loewe has a pretty interesting website. By the way, did you know that in German Loewe means lion? Perhaps the brand took this as a literal reference when styling Daria's hair?
